LuGreenAppleI am sure that many of you heard about the tragic loss of Baby Boy Bakery blogger, Jacqui Saldana’s 3 year-old son. Through blog posts and instagram, mothers and fathers, friends and strangers collectively mourned. We all agreed, “this just doesn’t make sense.”

And it doesn’t. How such a loving, beautiful family could go through something as tragic as this. Earlier this week, Saldana’s son, Ryan, was playing frisbee. In an attempt to catch and further the game, he ran out into the street and was struck and killed by a truck. When I first read the story, I cried.

I cried because I know life is precious and fleeting. I cried because I know I can’t always keep my daughter safe. And then, to compact an already emotional week, Lucy fell down the stairs. We have a baby gate at the top of our stairs, but in a moment of forgetfulness, we didn’t latch it. Ryan was in the living room, I was in the kitchen, and we both assumed that the other had their eyes on Lu. Suddenly, we heard a large crash. Terror and adrenaline coursed through my body. Ryan ran down the stairs and cradled our daughter in his arms.

OnAWalkTo say that it was one of the most terrifying moments of my life is an understatement.

Thankfully, we live in one of those 1950 split-level homes. She only fell down a few stairs, and she rolled on her side, instead of falling head first. Of course, she was scared and upset when we got to her…but after a few seconds of crying, she was laughing and playing again. There wasn’t even a bruise. But we were lucky. In one instant, your whole world can fall apart.

So all I know is that I’m holding onto her even tighter this week. I’m trying to find faith despite these tragedies. I’m trying to choose hope over despair. Keep the Saldana family in your thoughts and prayers this week.

A portrait of my daughter every week of 2014.

April is ending. The trees are blossoming and the days are stretching long beyond dinner. We’ve had sniffly noses and late nights. We’ve had warm afternoons followed by light snow. I am surrounded by change, and I see it no where more than in my daughter. She grows and learns and explores more each day. I watch her step out…and then run back to make sure we’re still there to catch her.

She’s talking, which I love. More than any milestone, her words are magical to me. I guess it should come as no surprise that a writer would find such delight in hearing her daughter ascribe meaning to the world with her voice. Chicken. Dog. Cat. Papa. Mama. She knows five words, and she knows them well.

She still isn’t walking but we’re so very close. I just spoke with Ryan (who is watching her while I teach tonight). He thinks she’s on the brink of taking those first few steps. I couldn’t agree more.

Easter

A portrait of my daughter every week of 2014.

Some of the best moments of my day? Early afternoon. Lucy has recently awoken from her mid-day nap, and she’s happy to be held, cuddled and tickled. I carry her into our bedroom and we play together on our bed. She laughs and snuggles, and my heart swells with so much love. It makes the less glamorous parts of my day (the dirty diapers, the soaked nursing bras, the dust under the couch) melt away. I’m with my daughter, and we’re both very much in love.

Mom and Lu with HorseAs I type this, sitting on my living room floor, Lucy is crawling up my back and laughing. She’s so active now, and it won’t be long before she’s walking and running. I’m trying to treasure each day of her babyhood because they really are passing so fast. Today, we’ll nurse and play and share oatmeal for breakfast. We’ll walk and snuggle and laugh. Happy Spring and Happy Easter, sweet friends. Thank you for all the love and support.

A portrait of my daughter every week of 2014.

Sleep. How it evades us. We’re nearing ten months of night-time nursing…and yet I get to wake up next to this sweet face each morning. It’s all worth it. Lucy’s cutting one of her canine teeth, which means she’s struggling with sleep even more. We ended up putting her in her cars eat last night and driving around our neighborhood in hopes the car and movement would lull her to sleep. It didn’t work. Of course.

We finally laid our tired baby in her bed at 10:00 pm. Almost three hours past her bedtime. Lucy was tired. Ryan was tired. I was tired. I tell myself that this season passes quickly. I tell myself that never again will I be “wanted” this much. And I watch her sleep…when she finally does…and all the frustration and exhaustion melts away.
